When Search Stops at the Answer: What AEO Means for Your Website

AI is all the range. And there's no doubt that it is changing marketing at a remarkable pace. Every day, clients and their marketing agencies are using AI platforms to streamline how they get work done. Platforms like ChatGPT, Claude or Canva can help create ads, write copy, formulate strategies, analyze information and develop content ideas ... all within a fraction of the time these tasks once took. And it's not just marketing professionals. Give any business owner an AI account and a few reasonably specific prompts, and suddenly everyone feels a little bit like a marketer. Honestly, in some ways they are. (Now, whether every AI-generated headline, image and 17-point content strategy should make it out into the world is best saved for a future blog post.)
But while marketers and business owners are understandably excited about how much easier AI can make our jobs, we may be overlooking the more important change: AI is making life easier for consumers. People can now ask a question and receive a direct, summarized response without opening 12 browser tabs, accepting 12 sets of cookies or going down a rabbit hole that leaves them wondering why they started searching in the first place. That shift is changing how people find businesses and organizations, which is exactly why "Answer Engine Optimization," or AEO, needs to become part of your website strategy.
A List of Possible Answers Versus the Right Answer
And consumers are getting increasingly comfortable with this new way of searching. A 2025 Reuters Institute study across six countries found that 54% of respondents had encountered an AI-generated search answer during the previous week. Among those who had encountered one, 50% said they trusted the answers, citing their speed, convenience and ability to aggregate information.
A speaker on a recent webinar described the difference between SEO and AEO in a way that stuck with me: A traditional search on Google or Yahoo gives you a list of possible answers, while a search through ChatGPT or Gemini attempts to give you the right answer. SEO helps your website appear prominently among the links someone might choose to visit. AEO helps an AI platform understand your content, determine that it is relevant and potentially use it to form the answer it provides. Put more simply, SEO helps you make the list. AEO helps you become the answer. Think about this for a second.
Making Your Website Ready for AEO
So how do you take advantage of this opportunity and make sure your organization becomes the answer on AI platforms? AEO. And fortunately, preparing your website for AEO does not require a complete rebuild, a proprietary research study or a team of developers waiting in the wings. There are many simple steps to help you ensure your website is AEO-ready.
Start by making sure that your website clearly explains what your organization does, who it serves and where it operates. Add an FAQ section based on the questions customers, donors or community members regularly ask to offer greater context to AI platforms. Give each page a descriptive title, meta description and heading structure that makes its purpose immediately clear. Use relevant keywords naturally, link related pages together and write meaningful alt text for your images. Clean URLs also help, since /services/marketing-strategy tells people and search platforms considerably more than /page-7. If you include statistics or outside information, identify and link to the original source.
None of this is especially glamorous, but neither is flossing, and we are still repeatedly told that it matters. The larger point is that your website is no longer communicating only with the people who visit it. It is also providing information to the AI platforms helping those people decide which businesses, nonprofits and organizations deserve their attention. Your content needs to be clear enough for AI to understand, credible enough to reference and useful enough that someone wants to learn more when your name appears in an answer. AEO should not replace an audience-first marketing strategy. It should become part of one.
